We are calling on everyone to take action in their way. this week, look at what you can do in your own life to reduce your carbon emissions. “What are some ways that you can take action?”-Reduce waste: with an estimated 50% of food thrown away globally, there is a lot of food to be saved!
Composting your food scraps and recycling is one of the simplest ways to reduce your carbon emissions. “Why are we doing this?”-There is currently a climate emergency, with half of Earth’s land now experiencing severe or extreme weather events made more frequent and intense by global warming. It would be great if everyone did their part in reducing their carbon emissions this week!

The topic for this year’s World Environment Day, which marks the 50th anniversary of the tradition, is “Only One Earth.”

Environmental Day History and Significance
Indira Gandhi, the Prime Minister of India, attended the first United Nations Conference on Environment in 1972. Participants endorsed a set of principles, the Stockholm Declaration and Action Plan, and several other resolutions at the meeting. The United Nations Environment Programme was also established at the Stockholm Conference (UNEP).
“The concept of World Environment Day has conceived 50 years ago at the Stockholm United Nations Conference on the Human Environment in 1972. It sprang from the realization that we must take action to protect the air, land, and water on which we all rely “In a message for World Environment Day 2024, UN Under-Secretary-General and Executive Director of the UN Environment Programme, Inger Andersen, remarked.
World Environment Day has been observed annually since 1974, and it has grown in importance as a platform for advocating progress toward the Sustainable Development Goals’ environmental goals.
Each year, nearly 150 countries take part in the festivities, which are organized by the UNEP. Environmental causes are championed by large corporations, non-governmental organizations, towns, governments, and celebrities all around the world.

Every year, a different country hosts World Environment Day, which includes celebrations and meetings. Sweden is the host country this year. With the help of UNEP and other partners, a high-level international gathering will be held this year.
“Stockholm+50: a healthy planet for everyone’s prosperity-our responsibility, our opportunity” is the theme of the gathering. It will take place on June 2 and 3, 2022. The events will highlight the most pressing environmental challenges.
“This movement, which began in 1972, is now at a critical crossroads. It’s a case of now or never. Because we are a single person with a single planet. We only have one place to call home. And that is something worth fighting for “In her speech, Andersen stated.
- The theme of World Environment Day 2022 is Only One Earth, focusing on “Living Sustainably in Harmony with Nature”.
According to the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP), the world population is steadily approaching 8 billion people, and we’re utilizing the equivalent of 1.6 Earths to maintain our existing way of life. Naturally, ecosystems cannot keep up with our demands and are rapidly deteriorating as a result.
We must remember that we only have one Earth and that we are running out of time to save it now more than ever. As a result, this year’s World Environment Day topic, “Only One Earth,” is a perfect fit for the current situation.

In order to achieve this, the day provides a platform for governments, businesses, and civil society groups to come together and discuss ways that we can all work together to improve the environment.
